i had read a couple of months ago that the flaming lips’ christmas on mars was finally going to be released, with the lips planning for a string of interactive viewing experiences along with a traditional dvd release. at the time i assumed the movie’s premiere would come in time for the upcoming christmas season, but now i realize that is not the case. instead the film is slated to debut at next march’s south by southwest festival, with a tour following later that year. so hopefully we will see a dvd release in time for christmas 2008. considering this is at least the third time the lips have set a release date for the project, i am still a bit skeptical and certainly much less excited than i was back in 2002 when i first heard about it. but i’m hoping that whenever it is released it will have been worth the wait.

this is a track from another movie project that the flaming lips were involved with– their long time friend bradley beesley’s 2001 documentary okie noodling. the lips have been whoring themselves out to a lot of second rate movie soundtracks as of late (good luck chuck, the heartbreak kid, mr. margorium’s wonder emporium, the list goes on…), so this look back at a quality soundtrack offering is especially refreshing. wayne’s introductory explanation of why the song’s lyrics revolve around masturbation is great. and unlike many recent lips contributions, the country tinged music here fits the theme of the film quite well. the soundtrack was given away as a promo, but never released– so i don’t see anything wrong with posting the rest of it here.
