destroyer covers
mp3: ruby isle- foam hands (destroyer cover) [link expired]
about a month ago, ruby isle starting doing a cover of the top song on elbo.ws each week. its a good gimmick and its certainly been paying off for them– the covers have gotten them more attention than their own songs ever could. i think that attention stems entirely from what a cool idea the project is, because the covers haven’t been very good. there is nothing that i like about this cover of “foam hands” except that it was once a destroyer song.
i have to give the band a break though– they didn’t choose to cover “foam hands”, its overwhelming popularity made the decision for them. and bejar’s songs aren’t easy to cover. there is something about him that i don’t think anyone can capture. and whatever that something is, there’s so much of it in his songs it’s hard for anyone else to make them their own. spoon’s cover of “it’s gonna take an airplane” is cool, but it is hardly noteworthy. even when bejar joined them onstage, it didn’t get that much better. but i hope they keep trying.
the best destroyer cover i have come across is actually the song after “airplane” on your blues, “an actor’s revenge”. final fantasy has been playing this song live for a year or two now, so he’s got it down pretty well. check below for one of the better takes i’ve heard, from a ff show in leeds. bejar also joined owen on stage, along with cadence weapon, to do the song at the fun fun fest last month. check that out here. for a guy who is notorious for hating to play live, bejar’s sure been doing a lot of it lately. looking good for a 2008 trouble in dreams tour.

owen also does a pretty nice cover of joanna newsom’s “peach, plum, pear” but that’s another post.
