silver jews- self ignition

in february rare book room records will release a two disc compilation featuring tracks recorded at their studio by various artists, including enon, avey tare, deerhunter, and the silver jews. all of the tracks on the comp are brand new songs specially recorded for the project, with the unfortunate exception of the silver jews track, “self-ignition.” david berman seems like a fairly methodical writer, so it isn’t surprising that he might not have any leftover tracks that didn’t make it onto 2008’s lookout mountain, lookout sea to contribute to the comp.

so looks like we’ll have to keep waiting for the new stuff. luckily though, “self-ignition” is a pretty nice tune, holding the distinction of being my 3rd favorite joos b-side. it was originally released in 1998 on the send in the clouds single– where few people probably heard it– so it’s cool it is getting a chance to be heard by a wider audience. and coming from the american water sessions, the song has one thing going for it that the upcoming lookout mountain doesn’t, steve malkmus. but if you caught that little guitar riff at the end of the verses, you already knew that.

i’ve got a bunch more joos b-sides and other stuff that i’ll probably be posting in the future as a lead up to lookout mountain’s release, so lookout for that.
