i pick notes from the sky

mp3: gary higgins- i pick notes from the sky [link expired]

i have just recently started bringing my ipod along with me when i ride the metro to work in the morning. one of the things i’ve noticed while riding the metro is how clearly audible many people’s ipods are, even if they’re several rows away from you. so now that i am listening to my own music, i take that into consideration when deciding what album i put on in the morning. i think of myself as the dj for the people in my immediate area and always try to put on something i feel like they might enjoy.

this morning i chose gary higgins’ album red hash for my fellow red line riders. i felt like it was the kind of thing that might agree with people both old and young, and it was unobtrusive enough that it could be easily tuned out . i think this song in particular fit nicely with the rainy morning mood.

red hash was originally released in 1973, but only to a very small group of people. higgins was sent to jail on drug charges shortly after he finished recording the album and it all but faded away as a result. with the help of six organs of admittance and the good people at drag city, the album finally saw a proper release in 2005 and the rediscovered higgins set out on a small tour in support of it. that rerelease garnered higgins a number of new fans (myself included) and it would be great if he could give his newly expanded fan base a sophomore album nearly 35 years overdue, though there has yet to be any hint of such a thing happening.
