cover of the week – destroyer vs. the new pornographers
as promised, destroyer is featured once again in the cover of the week. last week we had dan’s other band hello, blue roses doing a song off destroyer’s soon to be released album, trouble in dreams (it’s out tommorrow, buy it!). this week it’s destroyer vs. the new pornographers! dan has contributed about three songs to each of the new pornographers’ albums, at least some of which originated as destroyer tunes. what follows are the destroyer versions of new pornos’ songs that i am aware of. if i am missing any, let me know, i’d love to hear them! as for who wins the war of destroyer vs. the new pornographers, overall it’s destroyer for me all the way. but in each individual battle that follows it can get kind of tough to call. there’s lots of strong points on both sides, so be sure to look below and do some scouting before you choose your allegiances.
“the spirit of giving” was the b-side to destroyer’s 2001 music lovers 7″, released as part of the sub pop singles club. the new pornos gave the song a second life on last year’s challengers.

destroyer’s “jackie dressed in cobras” appeared on a quiet weather single series 7″ in 2004. it reappeared one year later on the new pornos’ 2005 album twin cinema.

“streets of fire” can be found on destroyer’s 1996 debut, we’ll build them a golden bridge. nearly a decade later, it showed up again on the new pornos’ twin cinema.

“breakin’ the law” is another track from we’ll build them a golden bridge. carl sings the song on the new pornos’ first album, mass romantic, released in late 2000.
