cover of the week – wolf parade stuff

today pitchfork announced the title and release date of the much anticipated follow up to wolf parade’s 2005 debut apologies to the queen mary. it’s called kissing the beehive and is due out june 17. assuming it’s not an early april fools joke, this is awesome news (pitchfork being the only one to report on it so far has got me a little suspicious) so i’m dedicating the cover of the week to wolf parade in celebration.

whether you want to count these as true covers is up to you i suppose… although it’s the same person singing it, different band names and musicians equals a cover to me.

atlas strategic was dan’s pre- wolf parade band and “day in the life” comes from the band’s first album rapture, ye minions! which i believe was released in 2001. i can’t recall
exactly which show this recording of “day in the life” is from, though i think it’s from wolf parade’s 2005 tour.

there might be some disagreement about who this song belongs to… it first appeared on sunset rubdown’s album snakes got a leg, but it’s wolf parade’s version of the song that is the most loved, adored and well known. when i saw sunset rubdown for the first time in late 2006, spencer opened the show with a solo keyboard version of the song (similar to the last one listed above). he prefaced it by explaining that the guy directly in front of him had requested it about 30 minutes prior and that it was originally a sr song, but he had given it to “his other band”.

considering spencer deeded the song to wolf parade, i guess “i’ll believe in anything” is more of a remodel than a cover… which makes the sunset rubdown version something like the before photos, taken to gauge the severity of the transformation… and man, it’s a big and beautiful change. you don’t need kendra todd and the savvy local realtor to know wolf parade will see/have seen a big return on their investment… though it would be cool to see a musical edition of my house is worth what?

the wolf parade recording of “i’ll believe in anything” is taken from a cbc radio session. look after the break for the official music video if your interested. of course there are several other wolf parade related covers… the band’s incredible cover of “claxxon’s lament”, sunset rubdown’s cover of “nothing compares 2 u”, handsome furs cover of “you got lucky” and a few others. those will have to wait until another time though.

most of the live wolf parade stuff i have listened to over the years has come to my ears courtesy of the wolf parade forum, so if you want to hear more (like live recordings of all the new songs wp have played in the past couple years) check over there.
