jens carelius – the first songs
mp3: jens carelius – on through the morning
meet jens carelius. he lives in oslo, where he plays the blues.
that is what he calls it, the blues, and the influence is definitely there. if i had to call it one thing though, i’d call it folk, à la nick drake. his is the name that immediately came to mind when i first heard jens voice on “song #1″. as the album went on several other names came up, like leonard cohen, howlin wolf and even ennio morricone (“on through the morning”). in my head at least, the man keeps quite good company.
though i think you will find that these lofty comparisons are not far off the mark. the first songs is an incredible album. an incredible debut album. it is not some long lost relic of another era, finally unearthed after years of nameless obscurity, but a brand new record, recorded in 2007 and released in january of this year. it’s hard to believe… it’s got that sound, the sound. there are very few artists making records today that sound this honest, this direct, this timeless. and it’s jens first (hopefully of many).
the first songs is so good that it’s truly a pity that no one (at least in the us) seems to know who the hell this jens is. in the past couple days i have seen the number of jens’ listeners on last.fm grow from 12 to 67… i suppose that is a start. but come on! the album has been out since january 28 and only 67 people have checked it out?
there’s a lot more to jens than this, but to put it simply… if you like nick drake, you will love this album. the first songs is hard to find locally, but it’s on itunes. so who’s gonna be number 68?
