mp3: pavement – blue hawaiian … [buy it]
pavement’s brighten the corners is the next in line for the deluxe reissue treatment and matador’s recently coughed up the details on the copious extras that will be tacked on to reissue. it should be no surprise now 4 albums in, but the amount of bonus tracks here continues to amaze me. the reissue will be released november 18, but as usual, matador will have even more extras to bestow on those who preorder, though no word on what those will be just yet.
i’ll likely be buying early no matter what the extras are though… i love this album! it was on volume 1 of my top 100 albums list, but had to be cut from volume 2 since i lowered the album per artist maximum from three to two.
it’s funny, i’m actually always a little surprised when i put brighten the corners on and hear “stereo”… because i listened to the album in the wrong order for years! a friend burned this and a few other albums for me many years ago, and i don’t know what was up with his computer, but the track listing for all those albums ended up getting alphabetized. this was back when i listened to music almost exclusively on a cd player, so it was probably 2 years before i tried to load it onto my computer and realized something was wrong with my copy of brighten the corners. i haven’t listened to it in that way for years, but it’s a much different experience. starting off with “blue hawaiian” vs. “stereo” alone is a huge shift in tone… try it out some time!
and yes, 2 years is a long time to listen to an album in the wrong order… but i don’t even feel stupid about it. just listen to “blue hawaiian”. the way the music creeps in and then malkmus’ “welcome to my friends”… that sounds like the start of an album, does it not?
