mp3: listing ship – voice of the future
things have slowed down a bit here lately, mostly because i’ve been struggling to keep afloat in a sea of video games. i’ve recently picked up spore, tiger woods 2009, mega man 9 and no more heroes… all of which require a sizable time commitment (particularly spore!)… and i’ve also been playing my life as a king and wii fit on and off for the last couple months, on top of mario kart, smash bros. and the other games that remain in semi-permanent rotation. it’s getting a little overwhelming… but i like the video games.
which brings me to “voice of the future” and it’s opening line “we like the video games!” (hey, me too). the voice’s of listing ship’s two main vocalists, lyman chafee and heather lockie, often come together much like i imagine a calvin johnson / kimya dawson duet would sound, and nowhere is that dual resemblance more evident than on “voice of the future”. continuing the lyman/johnson thing, “voice of the future” is closer to dub narcotic or the rebels not in than what was me, which certainly helps it to stand out from the mostly down-tempo country / folk ballad numbers that make up the rest of the album… it also makes it one of the album’s most instantly enjoyable tracks in my mind — though “you’ve got to pay attention” is likely my favorite. you can check out the rest of a hull of oil and bone when it releases october 14.
