two covers of tom petty and the heartbreakers’ 1982 hit “you got lucky”. setting sun’s cover was included on the recent buffetlibre dj’s comp rewind 2 and was recorded, mixed and mastered in the span of 24 hours. that’s pretty impressive, though i guess handsome furs’ cover technically beats it since, being a bootleg, it was recorded in under 4 minutes… this live recording is pretty old, from december of 2007… but its been getting a lot of plays recently as the song immediately following the last track of face control in my library…
anyway, to the recordings themselves… setting sun’s version remains firmly planted in the pop world of the original and amounts to a fairly faithful modern translation…. theirs is a pop song and it does its job well… handsome furs’ cover echoes the sound the band established on plague park… turning the song into something i could hardly imagine once occupying the billboard hot 100 …and making it a much more interesting, and moving, cover in comparison… which is probably why i keep letting “radio kaliningrad” run into it.

Venice is Sinking did this live, too. It’s floating around out there.
Wow! I hope Tom Petty hears this cover by Setting Sun. It’s as good or better than the original!
