lykke li at 6th & i

mp3: silver jews – the right to remain silent
as excited as i am to be seeing lykke li at the 6th & i synagogue (which is becoming one of my favorite venues in town) tonight … the knowledge that the silver jews are playing their last show ever this afternoon and then disbanding is hanging over my head.. yeah they’re playing in tennessee (in a cave), which would be quite a trip… and the news that it would be their last show was fairly late notice — tickets went on sale back in november and have been sold out for some time… and there were those planned south american dates, now cancelled… so though i’d like to be there, it’s understandable that i’m not. the show will eventually be broadcast on nashville’s wsm radio… i will rip it… that will be something…
although i’ve had plenty of time to process the news, and i support berman’s decision… this is still a sad day for me… the man who wrote my favorite album is hanging up his hat. it would be easier if he had just recorded “the answer to ’shiny happy people’” instead of an album that proved the silver jews could survive the transition to adulthood… post-40, berman remains as relevant as he has ever been… the specter of mick jagger is nowhere in sight… i know berman still has another great album in him and i expect he knows it too… that’s the way he wants it.. to leave us wondering what could have been, rather than disappointed with what was. i get it.. berman’s retiring with a near perfect record.. (obviously) i’ve always loved berman’s writing… and like i said i respect and support the decision… but… given the choice… i’d pick one joos song over the whole of actual air… so i’ll continue to stew over it for a while.
anyway…. this lykke li show tonight should be great. . i’ll be getting there early to grab a nice pew on the balcony rail… and with fellow swedes wildbirds & peacedrums opening, it should be interesting
