mp3: alessi’s ark – magic weather

what i left out of that blurb on the friend ships ep last week, lacking a shareable mp3 from the split, was any mention of the two songs from alessi’s ark. well here you go… they are good.

i’d never heard of alessi before putting on friend ships, and i’m guessing not many people in this country have. 1) because she hails from and does most of her hanging out in london and 2) because her debut full-length, notes from the treehouse, was just released on may 4th and only across the atlantic. as i’ve learned, that full length was recorded in omaha, which explains how alessi hooked up with thunder power for the split as well as some of the american folk influence heard in the music.

i’m still not going to post either of alessi’s songs from friend ships, as there are only two… you should probably just buy it. i will share some stuff from notes from the treehouse though because it’s worth checking out.

alessi’s voice is occasionally reminiscent of joanna newsom — i guess that could be good or bad depending who you are… i am of the opinion that newsom’s voice is one of the most beautiful things on the planet at this moment… so i’d go with good — though the music accompanying it is for the most part too conventional and uncomplicated to ever be mistaken for newsom. that’s probably got a lot to due with alessi seemingly having learned the guitar fairly recently and it’s not so much a criticism as a distinction. folk music is not meant to be complicated and that’s what she calls hers. notes from the treehouse is a frequently moving album that i imagine will appeal to a broad group of people. and considering alessi is apparently only 18… i’d give her congratulatory backpats by the european shit tonne for her work thus far.
