boris skalsky, of dead heart bloom, has returned to the sound of that band’s first two records — when it was just him, writing and recording alone — with the first album released under his own name, first songs. the first songs was the title of one of my favorite records of 2008, but while carelius’ album was truly his first collection of songs, skalsky’s title takes a different meaning. these are first songs in that the songs are preserved as they first came out, tracked and recorded by skalsky himself in the same night they were written and then more or less left alone. as with all the dead heart bloom albums before it, first songs is available online for free download right now and will be released officially on june 2, through skalsky’s own kei records.
