mp3: of montreal – breaking glass / be my wife

thanks to yanp for this bootleg of of montreal doing a mix of two songs from low, “breaking glass” and “be my wife”. as i’ve mentioned a few times before, low is awesome. it’s one of my favorite albums ever. so covers of low songs are always intriguing to me. phillip glass did a whole low symphony thing. it missed the mark but it was fun to listen to. this is in a similar category. musically, it’s actually not too bad of a cover… it sounds like the bass player simplifies their part a little, at least during the chorus of “be my wife”, but overall it’s impressive, particulary being live. maybe georgie fruit’s 70s funk band roots are rubbing off on the band. it is g fruit, or kevin barnes, that stops this from being a truly enjoyable cover though… he’s trying to channel bowie and it’s not working for me at all. if we could get a better quality recording, with barnes singing in his own voice, i think this could be really good.
