sunset rubdown — paper lace
for those who have preordered dragonslayer (due out june 23) or those who want to do so, mp3 download codes should be coming from jagjaguwar today, if you don’t have them already. the big question of course was whether sr “paper lace” > sw “paper lace”? after listening to them both repeatedly… my verdict is no. though this one is much more difficult to call than the destroyer “shooting rockets” vs. sw “shooting rockets” and i’m sure there will be a good deal of debate on it. i actually prefer camilla’s “oh sanctuary” chanting to dan’s and she maybe ties dan’s vocals throughout the rest of the song, but there is no replacing carey’s contributions, as subtle as they might appear. and considering the song is called “paper lace” it seems like the more delicate swan lake version is more fitting. as part of an (excellent) album, i’m glad to have sunset rubdown’s recording of “paper lace” .. but on a straight song vs. song evaluation… i’d bet on swan lake emerging the victor of that imaginary battle.
i’ll be nice to jagjaguwar and not post the mp3 since you can effectively pay a slight premium to download the album right now and consider the lp or cd you get in the mail in a month a bonus. if you don’t want to do that, this live clip will give you a general idea of the stylistic differences between the two versions. which do you prefer?
