bill callahan is playing the black cat this friday. i am moving to a new apartment this saturday. so considering i am quite excited for the show, and quite busy packing, expect a series of smog related posts… because they are appropriate and super easy for me to knock out.
the flaming lips included this live cover of smog’s “chosen one”, originally on julius caesar, on their 1994 ep due to high expectations… the flaming lips are providing needles for your balloons. as is his tendency, wayne will tell you all about it in the song’s intro, so i’ll skip that. i read an interview once in which callahan lamented that the lips did not put the cover on one of their actual albums. if i remember correctly (can’t find the interview), he estimated that had this been the case his royalty payment would have been in the range of $250k, a sum he figured large enough to live off of for the rest of his life. that’s bill callahan… the frugal dreamer.
callahan released a version of “chosen one” recorded during a peel session as the b-side to “cold blooded old times” as well as on the accumulation:none comp. check it out below.

update: just found this awesome father/daughter cover of “chosen one” on youtube. turns out the dad is the drummer for silver summit, among other things.
