smog — say valley maker (live)
“oh i cantered out here… now i’m galloping back”
i have written before about my love for “say valley maker” and that magic moment when the song transitions from canter to gallop. there i focused primarily on the drums’ role in that transition, but watching this video of callahan playing the song solo back in 2005 i realize it works just as well without the band. the steady gait of callahan’s fingers methodically picking away, breaking into a short sprint, each strum a dash forward, or back as the case may be. it’s a beautiful thing.
and just to clarify, the video is clearly wrong… labeling this one “palimpsest” for whatever reason.

other songs from this session include, “rock bottom riser”, “drinking at the dam”, “let me see the colts”,and “bloodflow”.
