a comment on destroyer / iran at the black cat
mp3: iran – tee hee
i meant to post this a week ago, but i guess did not quite push publish hard enough…
a week later, the feeling still stands though… iran was a huge disappointment… i am only a modest fan of the band having just gotten into them recently, but i had some real expectations. expectations that were so far from being met, i doubted whether or not it was the “actual iran” i had seen until i returned from the show and compared a photo of aaron aites with my memory. several others nearby during the show expressed the same doubt… but yeah, it was them…
helping to corroborate the doubt at the time was the lack of the instantly recognizable kyp malone. some other dude with facial hair, but a whole lot less of it, subbed for him on guitar. i don’t think that had a lot to do with the unenjoyable set, i’m just pointing it out.
iran was not horrible. they did not, necessarily, suck. they were just thoroughly unenjoyable to the average audience member. one phrase, borrowed from pitchfork’s review of dissolver, pretty much sums up the band’s set: “meaty rock swagger”. nothing but. my friend at one point said the band reminded him of…. creed….. he had probably had one too many drinks at that point, but that anyone could even reach to that comparison i think says a lot. and for the record, i don’t even have a problem with dissolver… i’m a fan for the most part. i can’t imagine what it would have felt like to go to that show hoping for the moon boys, but i feel for those people. we ended up retreating to the sidewalk, preferring fresh air to the end of iran’s set.
dan, on the other hand, was in top form. youtube user cotafloata has got 10 songs up from destroyer’s xx merge set (plus many other awesome videos from other’s at xx merge). we got all those songs you’ll see played there with the exception of “the chosen few”, plus “the temple”, “the state”, “no cease fires”, “don’t become the thing you hated”, “sea of tears”, “self portrait with thing” and “virgin with a memory”. twice i considered shouting out a song title, but decided to keep quiet and was rewarded with dan immediately playing the song i had been thinking of. it was incredible.
