if there is such a thing as a form for quidnunk, this may well be a return to it. hearkening back to the old “best of [time period]” cd-r’s, sanemagogna’s eleven songs/fragments were recorded simply and given just enough space (hopefully) to convey an idea. the intent was to capture the songs as close to their conception as possible, while the feelings behind them were still fresh and the ideas not quite fully formed. it’s a process that allows little regard for fidelity or perfection (check the drums for example, no idea how to play those), but no one was looking for those things in a quidnunk record anyway.

so the voting has closed on the first cover throwdown and curtis williams’ “witchcraft” seems to have left the judges spellbound, capturing 41% of the vote. in addition to the fame/honor that comes with the victory, curtis also got to choose the slate of nominees for the next throwdown. his picks are…

1. Prince – I Would Die 4 U (know it was in the Last mix, but I really love it, and will probably end up recording it anyways even if we dont pick it)

2. The Clash – Rock The Casbah (it was hard picking just one Clash tune, but I think this one could really go in all kinds of crazy directions)

3. David Bowie – Suffragette City (even harder to pick just one tune, probably my favorite artist of all time. I figured this would really be fun to lay down)

so vote for the song you’d most like to cover / hear covered. and if you plan to participate, leave a note below saying you are down.

once it appears there is a majority opinion, we’ll get a note out to the participants with the decision and a deadline.

a couple of those shelved songs appeared in new forms that year on the mystery squid album flight of can beer, but the rest have remained tucked away on a forgotten hard drive until now. post a 2-plus year hiatus, quidunk has begun writing new material for what will be his third full length album. but, not wanting to abandon those unreleased recordings completely, he chose a few of his favorites to release as a digital-only ep through acoustaclaw records. minus some dusting off, you’ll find the songs more or less how quidnunk left them back in 2007.

as with another evening primrose, this digital re-release is the first time galumphing guitars has been made widely available, with just over two dozen physical albums originally released in late 2006.

the majority of galumphing guitars was written during the recording of another evening primrose and recorded just after that album was finished, though a few of the songs on the album were holdovers from several unreleased collections a few years prior (tracks 3, 4, 5 and 11) that were too good to leave that way. “peebles” and “i’m about to eat some rice” are thus far the only released tracks from the very first quidunk project; dozens of recordings of instrumental music accompanied by a frequently incoherent synthetic narrator via textaloud. and while the quidnunk version of “untitled” is a new one, the song had also been around for several years… appearing previously on the mystery squid ep anomally and then again on the full length cursed fig tree.

so galumphing guitars is something of a goulash, composed of various synthetic and analog elements from various points in time stewed together into a single, satisfying whole.
